Standing for a brighter future - for what's right, fair and decent !

Hello my name is Pete Muswell, I have lived in Finsbury all my life (so far) and have recently decided to stand as a Lib Dem councillor in the May elections for the Bunhill Ward in South Islington & Finsbury.
I am probably the least political person you could ever meet but am standing because I want a local council that I can trust - one that is fair, open, honest and truly democratic and I think the Lib Dems are our best chance of achieving a brighter future, by doing what's right, fair and decent.
Now I am not saying the Lib Dems are perfect or have all the answers, who does, but in my experience, at least they listen to local residents and, on balance, I honestly believe they are going to be better custodians of the EC1 area and will better protect and promote the long term well-being of EC1 residents, than any other Party.
I would like to make it very clear that these pages are designed to tell you about me and my personal philosophies and values and MAY not necessarily reflect official Lib Dem policies - but that's the great thing I have discovered about the Lib Dems - I am allowed to have my own opinion and as long as I fairly and honestly represent the views of the people I am elected to represent (if I am lucky enough to get that far), I will be able to champion those issues and ensure they get a fair hearing.
So my decision to stand as ward Councillor is largely based upon what I have seen first-hand at TMO meetings and in our dealings with the Council, and I am convinced that because Lib Dem councillors vote with their conscience - and then do their best to achieve the policies that have been agreed BY A MAJORITY of the Councillors - I think most would agree this is the most open, the fairest and indeed the most PROPER way to agree policies and get things done - true democracy, for the people, by the people.

Can you help ?

OK, so that's WHY I am standing for election, but what next ?

Well, if I am to stand any chance at representing the needs and wishes of the community, my first task is to actually get elected - and that's where you come in !

I have never stood as a Councillor before, but it's obvious I can't do it alone - and that is why I am asking for YOUR help - either by just voting for me and my Lib Dem colleagues Jyoti Vaja and Adrian Hall, or if you have time to spare, by helping us raise public awareness and letting people know what we stand for and the issues we want to tackle.

So if you can spare the time and energy to help, please give me a call on 07905 311 233 or email me pete@muswell.net to discuss how we can work together towards a better future for Bunhill ward and its residents.

Even if its just a few hours a month in the run up to the elections to help knock on a few doors and find out what local people really want from their local Councillors, any help or support you could give would be gratefully recieved and truly appreciated.

Political Activity

I am passionate about improving and maintaining our environment which is why my family and I are members of our estate gardening club and keen supporters of Islington in Bloom.

Many of the anti-social behaviour problems faced by our communities today can be traced back to problems that started at school, with poor attendance, under-achievement and truancy setting some youngsters off on the wrong path. Our education system is good but it could be a great deal better and this is why 20 years ago, I volunteered to be a parent governor of St Lukes Primary School, near Old St where my four children attended. Almost sixteen years on, I am now a governor of that same school again, but this time representing the Local Education Authority.

Poor housing is a significant contributing factor to poor attendance at school and estates can become very run-down and neglected if local residents don't get involved in managing them, which is why I serve as a board member of our TMO (tenant management organisation).

Crime and Anti-Social Behaviour - probably my biggest pet-hate is drunken rowdiness late at night along "Drunkards Alley" which starts at Turnmills in Farringdon, and works its way along Old Street towards Shoreditch. I have lost count of the number of times I have been rudely woken up by drunken shouting and screaming in the small hours on the weekends - which seem to be extending to Thursdays nowadays. So if elected, I promised to do my level best to get Zero-Tolerance Policing to combat late night noise and anti-social drunkeness.
